Melbourne Gas Shortages: What Homeowners Need to Know (and How to Stay Ahead)

You may have seen headlines warning about gas shortages, but what does this really mean for your home?

According to recent reports from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), Australia, including Victoria, is facing potential gas shortages over the coming years. Forecasting a significant supply shortfall as early as 2028, driven by declining production not keeping pace with demand.

A shortage doesn’t just mean there’s less gas available. Costs will likely rise as demand grows and supply tightens, which will directly affect households and businesses that rely on gas for heating, cooking, and hot water. We can also expect service disruptions, especially in colder months when demand peaks and leads to unreliable supply. Many key gas pipelines and systems are already operating at full capacity, leaving little room to handle increased demand.

There is a separate conversation calling for a decrease in the export of Australian gas.

Despite the vast amount of gas produced each year, most is exported internationally. Domestic supply hasn’t been a priority, and investment has leaned heavily towards export infrastructure instead of strengthening local distribution.

In a twist, despite being one of the world’s top gas exporters, Australia is now building its first gas import terminal to assist with domestic demand. Raising further questions about long-term energy planning and local supply security.

Rob Wheals, CEO of Squadron Energy, spoke to ABC News about the new import gas terminal being built in Port Kembla, “We don't have time to wait. We don't have time for 12 months of negotiating and managing rule changes, when in fact, what we're staring at is a gas crisis emerging.” See the full coverage here.

What does this mean for you?

The future of gas use is growing more uncertain, and it’s not just about supply. As prices rise and reliability falters, you may find yourself re-evaluating how you plan, budget, and manage your home’s essentials.

Everyday comforts like heating, cooking and hot water could soon come with a higher price tag or unexpected interruptions. These pressures will also influence bigger decisions, such as upgrading ageing appliances or switching to more dependable alternatives.

By staying informed and proactive, you can make confident choices now to protect your comfort, safety, and long-term budget.

What you can do now

We’re here to help you make informed decisions today, so you’re not caught off guard tomorrow. Don’t wait for price spikes or shortages to impact your household. Now is a great time to start thinking about what you can do to future-proof.

Book a Gas Safety Inspection

Regular inspections help ensure your gas systems are operating safely and efficiently. Catch leaks, faults or signs or wear early, before they become costly emergencies.

Upgrade Old Appliances

Outdated gas heaters, cooktops or hot water units often use more energy and cost more to run. Look to find newer, more energy-efficient options to reduce your gas use and save money.

Explore Alternatives to Gas

Considering a shift away from gas? You’re not alone. Many homeowners are exploring alternatives such as electric, solar or heat pump options.

With the future of gas supply and pricing uncertain, you may be considering reducing your reliance on gas. Whilst transitioning away from gas for heating and cooking can seem complex, replacing individual systems, like hot water heaters, is an easy and impactful change to make.
